Chapter One: Introducing Whiskey in a Teacup

Academy Award-winning actress Reese Witherspoon shares stories, traditions, hairstyling techniques and homemade recipes in her first book Whiskey in a Teacup: What Growing Up in the South Taught Me About Life, Love, and Baking Biscuits. When Reese Witherspoon was in her late twenties, she was enjoying great success in her movies. Yet at this time, she was at a crossroads. She was facing some hard choices that she needed to decide on. One day was particularly rough for her. In a room full of men, all of them were asking about her decisions. One of the men in the room approached Witherspoon and asked, "How do you want to handle this?" She paused to think on how he will answer the man. And then a voice came to her, "Well, I'm a lady. I'm going to handle it like a lady." She wondered where that voice came from because she never said those words before. In her voice that day, she remembered all the women she grew up within the South. They are women who, in being a Southern lady, became the source of their joy, confidence, and strength in times of trials and times of joy. On that day, one particular voice stood out for her – the voice of her beloved grandmother Dorothea.

Her grandmother Dorothea would always tell her that Southern women were "whiskey in a teacup." They may look ornamental or delicate on the outside, but inside they have strength and fire. It was the combination of beauty and strength that makes them "whiskey in a teacup." Witherspoon's Southern heritage has shaped her whole life. She loves to spread the love for Southern living everywhere she goes. She admits that it somehow became her obsession. She brings the South wherever she goes with big holiday parties, bluegrass and plenty helpings of Dorothea's fried chicken. She reflects Southen style in the way she decorates her home, the way she entertains and makes holidays special and meaningful to her three children. Even in how she talks, dances and does her hair, she has evidently radiated the Southern spirit.

Witherspoon shares the Southern style that surrounded her childhood. She pays tribute to all the women who shaped her life. In Whiskey in a Teacup, she shares more of her Southern roots in her personal stories and how-to’s, how a Southern lady would do it. Witherspoon is drawing heavily on the life lessons she learned from her late grandmother. Witherspoon encourages you to bring a little bit of the South in the home where you live, no matter where you live. “After all,” she says, “there’s a Southern side to every place in the world.”
